In addition to our team's work in the field of weight loss surgery, our experts can treat many conditions of the gastrointestinal tract through a variety of minimally invasive surgery procedures. At Winthrop Surgical Associates, P.C. in Long Island, New York, we treat patients who come to us for our personalized treatment, supportive postoperative care, and expertise in general surgery.
Many general surgery procedures offered through the Winthrop Surgical Weight Loss Program are performed with a laparoscope. The laparoscope is a small telescope with a high-resolution camera that is inserted into the body during surgery. Our surgeons use the laparoscope to see what is going on inside the body while performing the surgery remotely with use of a computer monitor.
Laparoscopic procedures are minimally invasive, and surgery requires only small incisions through which the laparoscope and surgical instruments enter the body. Patients recover much more quickly after this type of surgery than after open surgery, which requires much larger incisions. We offer both open and laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery at our center.
We use minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery at our Long Island, New York practice whenever possible for the following procedures.
We offer several minimally invasive surgery procedures for the treatment of acid reflux, which is sometimes called chronic heartburn. We specialize in the Nissen Fundoplication, Toupet Fundoplication, and Dor Fundoplication procedures that alleviate chronic heartburn, and we can also perform a Heller Myotomy to treat achalasia, a condition that causes difficulty in swallowing and is associated with acid reflux.
The colon (large intestine) and small intestine make up the part of the digestive system between the stomach and rectum. A number of diseases and disorders can be treated by performing surgery on the intestines and rectum. Intestinal surgery often involves removing diseased portions of the intestines and resecting (sewing together) the healthy portions. Colon surgery is performed most often to remove cancer or precancerous growths called polyps. Diverticulitis, rectal prolapse, or inflammatory bowel disease can often be treated through surgery on the colon or rectum. Our surgeons are highly experienced in minimally invasive surgery procedures that treat many of these problems of the intestines and rectum.
A hernia occurs when the inside layers of the abdominal wall weaken, then bulge or tear. Next, the inner lining of the abdomen pushes through the weakened area to form a balloon-like sac into which a loop of intestine or abdominal tissue may slip, resulting in pain and other potentially serious health problems. We specialize in minimally invasive surgery to repair ventral/incisional hernias of the groin, as well as inguinal hernias appearing at the site of a prior surgical incision.
Diagnostic laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgery procedure performed at our Long Island practice in which Dr. Alex Barkan and Dr. Collin Brathwaite use a laparoscope to view the inside of the body. This “second look” procedure, allows our surgeons to gain information about the status of a previously treated condition, such as cancer, or as a preliminary examination before conducting a more invasive exploration of certain parts of the body.
We also offer other minimally invasive general surgery procedures in New York through Winthrop Surgical Associates, P.C., including:
