Dr. Collin EM Brathwaite is Chief of the Division of Minimally InvasiveSurgery and Director of the Bariatric Surgery Program at WinthropUniversityHospital on Long Island New York.He is a graduate of Howard University College of Medicine where he completed medical school in only three years, with Honors in Surgery.His Internship and Residency in General Surgery, which included training in bariatric surgery, were obtained at St Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center in New York City, where he finished in 1988. Dr Brathwaite also attended advanced Fellowship training in Trauma and Critical Care at the prestigious ShockTraumaCenter at the University of Maryland.He has actively practiced bariatric surgery since 1998.Dr Brathwaite has directed Bariatric Surgery programs at StonyBrookUniversity as well as St Catherine of SienaMedicalCenter, both on Long Island.Dr Brathwaite has also held leadership roles in several prestigious professional surgical organizations, having served on the Board of Directors or management committees of these.He is an active member in the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, the Society for Laparoendoscopic Surgery and the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society to name a few. Dr Brathwaite is an Associate Professor of Clinical Surgery at StonyBrookUniversity and has held faculty appointments at the RobertWoodJohnsonMedicalSchool, as well as AlleghenyUniversity of the Health Sciences in the past. He has been the recipient of several teaching awards, has authored or co-authored numerous publications on various aspects of surgery, and at present holds two patents. His current research interests include clinical outcomes from various bariatric surgery procedures and investigations on the impact of gastric bypass on Type 2 diabetes and obesity using a laboratory model. Dr Brathwaite has also been honored as a clinician by being listed as a “Top Doc” by Philadelphia Magazine, as well as citation by Best Doctors in America on several occasions and as one of America’s Top Surgeons by Castle Connolly Medicine Ltd.
Dr Brathwaite performs various laparoscopic bariatric surgery procedures including Gastric Banding, Roux en Y Gastric Bypass, and Sleeve Gastrectomy. He also performs da Vinci Robotic Gastric Bypass Surgery in addition to other Robotic Procedures. He has extensive experience in Laparoscopic Revisional Surgery including banding, bypass and laparoscopic revision of prior open Vertical Banded Gastroplasty. Dr Brathwaite has been a speaker at the Center of Excellence training seminars of the Surgical Review Corporation and has served as a consultant to the Health Plan Association of New York and the New York State Department of Health in developing and implementing Guidelines for Bariatric Surgery in the state.He has established and directed Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence programs in both the private practice and the academic practice setting.Dr Brathwaite serves on the Bariatric Surgery Review Committee, a national body that evaluates programs that apply to be a Center of Excellence. In addition to Bariatric Surgery, Dr Brathwaite also performs other minimally invasive procedures in General Surgery with a major focus on Gastrointestinal Surgery. Some of these include treatment of achalasia, intestinal resection for cancer, removal of the spleen, treatment of adhesions, hernias of all types and gall bladder disease.
Dr. Barkan joined Winthrop Surgical Associates and the Bariatric Program in 2008 from University of PittsburghMedicalCenter Program in Bariatric Surgery.A graduate of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Dr. Barkan earned his medical degree at St. George’s University School of Medicine, Grenada, West Indies.He completed postgraduate training in internal medicine at HahnemannUniversityHospital, Philadelphia and a general surgery residency at Hahnemann and at MaimonidesMedicalCenter, Brooklyn, NY, where he served as chief surgical resident.He then completed a one year fellowship in laparoscopic bariatric surgery under the direction of Dr. Robert E. Brolin, (a past President of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and an internationally known pioneer in the field of Bariatric Surgery). at the UniversityMedicalCenter at Princeton.Dr. Barkan is Board Certified and is a member of the American Medical Association, the AmericanCollege of Surgeons and the American Society of Bariatric Surgery. Dr Barkan performs various Bariatric Surgery procedures using minimally invasive techniques. These include Laparoscopic Roux en Y Gastric Bypass, Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding, Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy as well as Revisional Procedures. He also continues to practice General Surgery utilizing minimally invasive approaches such as Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS). Some procedures include resection of the intestines for cancer, gallbladder, spleen and repair of various types of hernias.
