Expansion of the Winthrop Surgical Associates Hernia Surgery Program

Hernia surgery is the most commonly performed general surgical procedure in the United States. Over 1 million hernias are repaired every year, 800,000 of which are inguinal or groin hernias. Despite the prevalence of hernia repair there are still many considerations of surgery and as a result, some patients experience recurrence or other complications that require further treatment.

Our hernia program therefore has placed an emphasis on two important considerations when repairing hernias. First, when repairing straightforward, smaller defects, we emphasize patient selection as well as appropriate technique to ensure that complications are minimized after surgery. In addition, using the laparoscopic or robotic approach often helps reduce the recurrence rate as well as improve patient outcomes, although we do offer open surgery for appropriate cases. Second, for patients with recurrent hernias and/or extremely large defects, we combine our surgical expertise and experience in managing complex conditions to create a plan for definitive hernia repair.

One of the distinguishing features of the NYU Langone Long Island Surgical Associates hernia program is that when appropriate, we have the expertise to perform complete, complex abdominal wall reconstruction. This is usually approached in an open or robotic manner – patients will be screened for the most appropriate technique – and requires the meticulous rebuilding of each layer of abdominal muscle ad tissue to create a long-lasting repair.

Modern surgical technique and devices have made hernia repair safer and more effective while reducing complication and recurrence rates significantly. NYU Langone Long Island Surgical Associates surgeons are proud to be at the forefront of these improvements in the quality of surgical care and have expanded our program to offer patients more options for safe and definitive hernia repairs. While most general surgery and hernia repair programs offer one or maybe two techniques for the management of hernias, our program has a wide range of techniques that can be tailored to the patient’s particular circumstance. Further, the patient can be comfortable in the knowledge that they are aware of all viable options for their care.
