The Quick Guide To Love Your Body

by Barbara Brathwaite, RN, MSN

You’ve taken the big step and had weight loss surgery.  Now is the time to focus on the new “you” and the lifestyle changes required to support the new “you”.

Three important steps in this process include prioritizing your need, seeing the positive and adopting an attitude of gratitude

Prioritizing your needs

  • You need to be the number one priority.  Your health and well being has to be top of the list.
  • Listen to your body – really listen. What is your body trying to say?  What do you need?
  • One way of caring for you is by setting limits and saying “no” occasionally. Do you stand up for yourself and make your needs known? Treat yourself the way you would treat your best friend.

Seeing the positive

  • Try working on some strategies to improve your body image. Body image is linked to self esteem. Increasing your self esteem will produce a more positive connection between your mind and body.
  • Compliment yourself. Start your day thinking of something that makes you special. Focus on the parts of your body that you like and appreciate.
  • Join an exercise or dance group. Many patients feel more comfortable joining movement groups that are supported by their bariatric program.  Do something you have always wanted to do but never dared. Self confidence is sure to follow.

Adopting an attitude of gratitude

  • Appreciate the good things in your life.
  • When you feel positive and grateful, your motivation will increase.  Appreciate your body and be grateful that it functions the way it does.
  • Acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments you’ve made since surgery.

Follow these simple strategies and get on track to learning how to love your body!!
