NYU Langone Health Receives Top Honors for Safety and Quality

Dear Colleagues,

I’m pleased to announce that this year, NYU Langone Health received two prestigious awards from The Leapfrog Group that speak to our unwavering commitment to improving quality and safety in healthcare, even in the midst of an unprecedented global pandemic. The Leapfrog Group is a leading national nonprofit that assesses the quality and safety of hospitals across the country based on available health data.

Of note, NYU Langone Health, NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn, and NYU Langone Hospital–Long Island were each awarded an ‘A’ in the fall 2020 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade. This national distinction speaks to our achievement in providing the highest level of patient care across the institution. In addition, The Leapfrog Group recognized NYU Langone and NYU Langone Hospital–Long Island with its Top Hospital Award for Outstanding Quality and Safety, an honor attained by only 105 hospitals across the country. This award assesses hospital performance on the highest standards for quality and patient safety, and only hospitals that rank among their top peers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey are considered.

The Leapfrog Group awards are yet another important recognition of our steadfast commitment to providing world-class care and quality in academic medicine. I have said before that we must not place too much credence on external ratings systems. No single hospital ranking provides a complete picture of the care we provide, because different bodies use different metrics and weight them in different ways.

That said, when looking at a number of the most respected ratings systems together, NYU Langone consistently comes out on top nationally and in New York State and the metro area across the leading healthcare quality ratings, including Leapfrog, U.S. News and World Report, Vizient, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

We should all feel proud that we continue to lead the way in quality, especially in light of the challenging year we’ve had. Each one of these accolades represents hundreds of small moments in which you are choosing to follow best practices and standards, scrupulously capture data, and most importantly, treat our patients as unique individuals whose needs are at the center of it all. I’m grateful to each of you for your hard work, which results in our continued success for our patients and the communities we serve.

Best regards,

Robert I. Grossman, MD
